A couple of months ago I moved into a home where a heavy smoker used to live. The walls are stained heavily with nicotine everywhere. I tried painting over it in a small area, but that is not working. What is a good way to remove these stains? |

First wash all the walls thoroughly with a Trisodium Phospate (TSP) cleaner. Be careful since this is a very strong cleaner. Make sure you leave your windows and doors open. After you have done this, then prime the entire area with Graham’s Acryplex oil based stain-blocking primer, or Graham’s 100-00 Aqua Borne Ceramic Universal Stain Blocking Primer. Tint your primer to 40-50% of your top coat color. This works the best. The surface may appear patchy, but that is okay. After you dry this for 24 hours, then apply your finish coat of paint. |
